Plant Description:
Vanilla Planifolia is an orchid in the ‘Vanilla’ genus. Native to South América and Mesoamerica, the pods are born on stalks that bear white/cream colored flowers and require hand pollination for fruit set. Vanilla is capable of flowering once the stem diameter exceeds 6mm, the pods themselves following curing develop their distinctive sweet aroma and taste. Vanilla is used extensively to flavor desserts/ice cream, in baking as well as in perfumes.
Expected plant height = 40 cm
Cultivation Requirements:
Vanilla thrives in tropical and subtropical climates and is not tolerant of frost. It grows best within a temperature range of 20°C to 30°C but can tolerate short periods of cooler temperatures. Due to New Zealand’s climate, vanilla plants are often grown indoors or in greenhouses, especially during winter months.
Vanilla is a climbing orchid that requires support for growth. While young plants can be supported with coir poles, mature vines become heavy and may cause such poles to collapse. More detailed trellis designs will be provided on the blog soon.
As an epiphyte, vanilla grows best in light, fertile, and porous media. Orchid bark or well-draining potting mixes are recommended to replicate its natural growing conditions.
Excessive moisture combined with poor air circulation can lead to stem rot, so it is important to avoid waterlogging and ensure adequate airflow around the plant.
Vanilla produces epiphytic roots that benefit from foliar feeding, such as seaweed-based fertilizers. Regular light misting helps maintain the high humidity levels necessary for healthy growth.
