Turmeric Plant

Plant Description:

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a tropical perennial in the ginger family. Native to the Indian subcontinent, Turmeric produces underground rhizomes that has been used for millennia for culinary and medicinal purposes. Typically reaching a height of 1 to 1.5 meters, the rhizomes are ready for harvest in the same winter, if planted early spring. A great addition to the understory of a food forest. 

Expected plant height = 15 cm

Cultivation requirements:

1. Ensure a well-drained, loamy soil is used to avoid rhizome rot.
2.  Turmeric prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade.
3.  Optimal temperature range is above 10°C. Turmeric is sensitive to frost and will die back in the winter.
4. Regular watering is necessary during the active growing period to encourage adequate rhizome development, ensure compost is applied to soil to boost fertility.
