Some of the rarest plants in NZ!

The Green Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) is a subtropical perennial very rarely found in NZ, valued for its beautiful foliage and its ability to produce the well-known green cardamom pods. Distinct from the commonly available false cardamom (Alpinia nutans) which does not produce edible pods, mature plants grow to 2 meters and form small white and pink flowers at inflorescences originating from the base of the plant, which can develop into aromatic pods when grown in warm, sheltered conditions. In New Zealand, pod production is most reliable in greenhouses or protected indoor areas, while outdoor plants are typically enjoyed for their clean, attractive foliage with pod harvests possible when conditions are favorable. These plants are clones from larger 2-3 year old mother plants, from imported seed. A limited number of these rare plants are available!

Growing Instructions

Temperature: Green cardamom prefers consistently warm, frost-free conditions and does not tolerate cold temperatures. In most parts of New Zealand, it is best grown indoors, in a greenhouse, or in a sheltered microclimate. Protect plants from winter chills, especially in cooler regions.

Soil: Green cardamom plants are best grown in wide pots, which can be brought indoors during winter. Plant in a well-draining, soil rich in organic matter. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils, which will slow growth and harm the roots.

Watering: Maintain steady, even moisture without allowing the soil to become saturated. Cardamom benefits from regular watering, particularly during warm weather, but requires good drainage to prevent root issues, especially during winter.

Sunlight: Provide bright shade, Direct, harsh sunlight will scorch the foliage, especially during New Zealand’s spring and summer months. Indoors or in greenhouses, place the plant where it receives 50% shade.
