Black Mulberry (Morus nigra)
Black Mulberry is a deciduous fruiting tree producing sweet and tart dark purple to black berries up to 3 cm in length, suitable for fresh eating, preserving, and cooking. Trees prefer a full sun position and perform best in well-drained soil but will tolerate a range of soil types. Regular watering is recommended during establishment, with good drought tolerance once mature. Black Mulberry is frost hardy, low maintenance, and slow growing in the early years, developing into a long-lived tree. Suitable for home gardens and small orchards throughout New Zealand.
